Rev

Overview

Rev is a company that provides transcription of audio files and captioning for video files. They hire freelance workers to complete this work, which they can do from home or anywhere in the world, at any time they choose.

Applying:

The application process to Rev is quite straightforward; you fill in your details, take a short test to check your knowledge of spelling and grammar, and then submit a sample for transcription or captioning, whichever you are applying for. Acceptance times will vary massively depending on the need for new workers. When I applied, I was accepted within a couple of weeks. Having recommended the service to others, the wait has been anywhere from a few days to a few months. They will also let you know if you have failed the qualification, and you can reapply after 45 days.

Earnings:

Pay with rev can differ massively. New Rookies will earn a lesser amount than experienced Revvers and Revver+, and the pay per minute will depend on how quickly the customer requires the completed file and how difficult the job is to complete. Each job listed will give a pay per audio minute and a total payment, so you know what you're earning before you start the job. You can also work as much or as little as you'd like. There are no set hours as this is a freelance position, which means you can do this work around other commitments.
Payment is via Paypal and is very simple and reliable. Payments are made weekly, arriving in your account every Monday.

Reliability:

Rev doesn't become a reliable source of income for some time. Newbies to the site will need to complete 1200 minutes of audio before becoming a Revver+, and until reaching this point your work will be monitored by Rev's graders, who will check how well you are sticking to the style guide on each job you complete. Once you become a Revver+ this becomes much easier and the files you complete are graded much less often.

Work availability can be very up and down. Don't expect to see much around the holidays, and weekends are pretty void of work too. There is almost always media of some kind, though, so if you're not fussy about what you're working on, there will be a way to keep earning.

My experience:

I have been working for Rev for several years now and have worked on both the transcription and captioning jobs. I struggled with the style guide and keeping my metrics up for the first few months, but since then it has been a very reliable source of income for me. My usual earnings from Rev alone are anywhere between £150 and £350 per week, dependent on the amount of work available, the type of work available, and whether I enjoy each individual file. It's been a massive source of my income in the last few years and is something I really enjoy. I am, however, quite a fast typist, and this is very important to the amount I earn. I have previously recommended Rev to friends who have not fared as well with it because their typing speeds were lower.

So, if you're a quick typist and enjoy varied work, I would definitely recommend giving it a go.

MobileXpression

MobileXpression is an app that is installed on your mobile phone and collects data about your usage in exchange for rewards.

What does it collect?

The data it records may include use of messaging services, mobile web browsing activity, usage and titles of downloaded applications and files, information regarding web pages you view, links you access, usage of cameras, video streaming and other utilities, as well as the usage times for such activities.

Earnings:

I receive two points per week in exchange for my data, and when I have collected 20 points I'm able to exchange it for a £20 Amazon voucher, which only takes 10 weeks. I have had the app downloaded on my phone for several years now and the amount I earn through it has never changed. However, my boyfriend decided to sign up on my recommendation and his points seem to be quite different. He earns just one point per week, has more options for vouchers than Amazon, but the points seem to be worth less at 15 points for a £10 voucher. I'm not sure if the system changed for new sign ups or if it differs for some reason, but this may be worth querying if you're not happy.

Is it worth it?

A quick Google search will bring up many complaints about MobileXpression, some warning that it's a scam, but I can only tell you about my experience. I've had the app installed on my phone for a few years now and have never had any problems with points, voucher exchanges or privacy issues. I've been very happy with it overall and enjoy receiving my £20 Amazon voucher every 10 weeks. If you're someone who doesn't mind sharing data for rewards, I would definitely recommend it.
